As Instar holistic, the aim is to offer an integrated, heart-centred approach to traditional Japanese Anma bodywork, Western clinical postural alignment methods, sound and vibrational therapies, yoga, qi gong and meditation.

Anma Therapy

Anma means 'push-pull' and is one of the oldest forms of traditional Japanese bodywork. It comprises of a unique blend of palpatory techniqes; soft tissue massage, acupressure, passive stretches and fascial release techniques for joint /spine mobilisation. Modern Anma Therapy uses Western clinical methods to assess joint range and structural issues and uses Kinesiology to test neural pathways for gait and postural imbalances. This integrated view of the body as a whole, and precise application of technique, allows corrections to be long lasting and 'global' - allowing the body to regain holistic balance. Anma can often reduce healing time after injury or surgery and releive other under-lying issues such as digestive disorders, skin rashes, insomnia etc. In addition, sessions can be highly beneficial for reducing stress related and anxiety issues, depression, grief, PTSD, hyperactivity etc; promoting a deep sense of well-being and relaxation by easing the nervous system back into the 'rest and restore' state.

A deeper dive into Anma

Modern Anma Therapy is a direct teaching from Masaaki Hatsumi, Japanese Osteopath and living Grand Master of the Nine Schools of Ninjutsu. Within this lies Taijutsu - an ancient healing art; its principles based on the concepts of 'Hi Chi Bu Ku Goshin Jutsu' or translated - 'The Secret School of the Opening Flower'. There are many factors that have an impact on our health: environment, emotions, electrical/energy, as well as our physical structure and nutrition. The inner 'push' of a flower to bloom when conditions are correct for it to grow and expand into its full potential, is a good metaphor for how Anma can be a remedy for the fact that in these hectic modern times, our bodies are contracting under stress of all kinds every day.

Biotensegrity is a key concept in the modern understanding of these teachings - developed by Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr Stephen Levin in the 1970's. This view of our human anatomy, understands that any changes to the soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) will ripple through the whole system - fascia is literally a global 'connective tissue'. This can be visualised as a shapeshifting web which torques and warps under pressure and can also be remodelled back into shape. But injuries, old trauma and stress can create compensatory muscular patterns over time, which pulls our postural 'rigging' out of alignment. This directly affects our unconscious patterns of gait and other movements which begin to 'hardwire' the use of additional or alternative muscules in an effort to hold us up and keep us together. No wonder our bodies can feel tired and out of sorts when we are using so much energy just to simply sit, stand and walk. Anma methods find these 'lesion' patterns and restores healthy, integrated neurological messages optimising the function of the core postural muscles. This leaves the body feeling lighter and 'suspended' and allows us to experience what it feels like to 'float in our walk' - the key to Hatsumi's movement techniques. Modern research is beginning to make this connection to how our bodies work too; finally moving beyond the limitations of our human anatomy being solely based on Newtonian physics and outdated theories of 'body as machine'.

During an Anma balance the client remains fully clothed and generally lies both on their front and back during a session. Most corrections are 'active', that is to say that joints are put through their range of motion, limbs are moved and the session can be thought of as a dynamic experience, rather than a passive one and is different every time. All sessions include work to balance the whole body and are tailored uniquely to individual requirements. Initial sessions begin with an in-depth consulatation and structural assessment, along with questions regarding lifestyle factors and nutrition. Maintenance exercises are recommended and advice can be given on tailoring any existing training programmes. One to one Yoga sessions and personalised exercise/ movement programmes are also available on request.

Sound Therapy and Yoga

Group 'soundbaths' are sonic immersions - no water involved! Participants sit or lie fully clothed as gentle sounds are played with crystal/metal singing bowls, gongs, percussion and voice. The soundscape aims to help transport the participant into a deeply meditative state. Full relaxation of the body only occurs when the nervous system feels safe to slow down. We are often so busy in our lives that we are in a heightened 'fight or flight' state, rarely creating the space to give our selves quality rest. Group or individual 1 hour sessions are available on request.

Instar Hatha yoga classes are friendly, mixed ability and suitable for all. Thorough guidance is given and hands on adjustments are a key part of every class. Often yoga classes and workshops are followed with a soundbath for the best of both.

I approach natural movement practice from a biotensegrous perspective and teach workshops for advanced yoga students and teachers who wish to deepen their own practice by gaining holistic anatomical insights, and learn how to apply these principles when adjusting students in class.

Do you produce events or run retreats?

I offer soundbaths, yoga classes, workshops and talks at retreats, festivals and well being events all over the Uk. These can be tailored to accommodate complete beginners to advanced practitioners, mixed ability and SEN's groups.

Instar Holistic's sister branch - Instar Arts - offers live music, soundscape performances, interactive art and creativity sessions. As a lifelong artist and at times professional painter, photographer, videographer and musician; I enjoy facilitating self-expression in others. 'Finding your creative flow' workshops invite participants to freely explore an artistic medium of their choice (* see list below) - with a beginners mind - often during a therapeutic soundscape /performance. This allows or renews a sense of play and can help overcome creative blocks, inspire new directions in current projects or set seeds for the start of something new... Please call me for further information if you would like to book Instar for your event.

Are you organising a party?

Perfect for small, private informal gatherings; birthdays, hen parties, DIY mini spa day (12 people max). This can be at your home or other suitable venue and is tailored to the needs of your group. Soundbaths and yoga sessions are offered as stand alone sessions or in varying combination with a range of creative activities - if desired - for a broader view of holistic health (and a bit of a giggle). * This can include painting, poetry/song writing, hand drumming, tarot readings and natal astrology chart interpretations. In collaboration with other creatives we can also offer; jewellery making, clay sculpting, willow weaving or hoola hooping... Please call to discuss your ideas and see how we can help curate a memorable day...

My background

Initially studying the Five Elements system through an interest in Chinese Martial Arts over 20 years ago, this foundation has continued to be an inspiring model for learning more about the body in clinical practice, but also using it to understand the world around us generally. Appreciating how nature's cycles flow and how basic elements permeate through all things - including us - lies at the core of my practice. This interest in 'energy anatomy' first led to training as a Reiki practitioner in 2003 and teacher in 2006. I have developed and teach a short course in Energy Development for personal and professional practitioners working with energy-based modalities. The course aims to under pin holistic health with an adaptable but simple daily practice and focus on self-care including; Japanese Do-In exercises, 5 Element Qi Gong, self-massage and Acupressure, breathing and meditation practices.

As a lifelong student curiously exploring all things musical; particularly woodwind, guitars, synths, drums and percussion - further study led me to the British Academy of Sound Therapy (BAST, 2005-7). Utilising the unique sounds of quartz crystal/ Himalayan singing bowls and gongs, and finding my natural voice - I experienced the profoundly transformational effects of intentional sound and vibration therapies.

Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training followed in 2007, as well as qualifying as an Ayurvedic Technician, which led to working at residential clinics in the UK and abroad offering Panchakarma detox programmes, (Ayurveda UK, 2006-10). I've taught Yoga classes to hundreds of people in diverse communities, schools, gyms and private clients - to all ages and levels of ability/mobility. I've learned that every single body is different and everbody learns and practices in their own unique way. This has helped me develop an inclusive approach to teaching and keeps me on my toes.

Further training has included foundation level Shiatsu and Macrobiotics, (Devon School of Shiatsu 2013-14 and Five Element Theory and Practice (Ealing School of Shiatsu 2014); and additionally KCR Level 1 and 2 (Kinetic Chain Release - Ireland 2017) - a fascial/ joint freeing system.

In more recent years study has included; Anma training with Amatsu UK ltd (Dennis Bartram 2018-2020) and Anma qualification with Amatsu Therapy International (UK)(Jane Langston 2020). On going Professional Development and further training in Anma/Seitei with Clare Heal's School - The Amatsu Training Space, Cardiff (2025-present) and Simon Heather (College of Sound Healing) (2020 -present).
